To convert time to a decimal number that represents the time in the internal Excel system, apply the General format to the cell.If any of the above formulas returns a value formatted as time, simply change the cell's format to Generalto display it as a number.Use the HOUR, MINUTE and SECOND functions like in the two previous examples (I believe at this point you don't need any further explanation of the formula's logic :) The formula is basically the same as in the above examples with the only difference that you convert the "day" unit to "sec": Multiply the time value by 86400, which is the number of seconds in a day (24 hours * 60 minutes * 60 seconds = 86400): =HOUR(A2)*60 + MINUTE(A2) + SECOND(A2)/60Ĭonverting time to total seconds in Excel can be done in a similar fashion. One more way to get the number of minutes is to multiply hours by 60 and divide seconds by the same number: To do the "time > minutes" conversion with the CONVERT(number, from_unit, to_unit) function, supply "day" as the unit to convert from and "mn" as the unit to convert to: You can view the results in the screenshot below: If you want to return the number of compete minutes, utilize the INT function like in the previous example: To convert time to total minutes, you multiply time by 1440, which is the number of minutes in one day (24 hours * 60 minutes = 1440): The same three methods can be used to convert minutes from the standard time format to a decimal number. Extract the individual time units by using the HOUR, MINUTE and SECOND functions, then divide minutes by 60 (the number of minutes in an hour) and seconds by 3600 (the number of seconds in an hour), and add up the results: To get the number of compete hours, embed the above formula in the INT function that will get rid of the fractional part:Īnother way to perform the "time > hours" conversion is to use the following Convert formula:įormula 3: HOUR, MINUTE and SECOND functionsįinally, you can use a bit more complex formula, whose logic, however, is quite obvious. You already know the fastest way to convert a time value to a number of hours in Excel - multiplying by 24, i.e. This section demonstrates 3 different formulas to convert hours from the standard time format (hh:mm:ss) to a decimal number. In the following sections, you will learn the other methods of converting times to a decimal number in Excel.

All Leatherman are 10% off through 11/22/11 with the code LEATHERMAN10.From a name you can trust, this top-rated multi-tool combines scissors, spring-action pliers, and 12 other indispensable tools. As a gift to a newbie or your guy who is suit bound most of the time, this is an excellent buy. The extras are kind of bland, though the carabiner is interesting and a neat platform for a different kind of multitool (how about a keychain carabiner where the carabiner is the chain AND the tools?). It is a great competitor for the junky Gerbers in the same price range. At around $30 this is a great tool for first time users or casual users. I like the outdoors theme and I like the saw, but two unnecessary tools and no scissors holds this guy back from multitool supremacy.Īnd that is saying a lot, given the price. The pliers are the best on any multitool. And in the end I think 17 is exactly right. Great tool performance even if tool selection leaves something to be desired. The saw works well, as do the rest of the tools, even the entirely unnecessary serrated blade. As a backup multitool weight is not much of a concern. My only small concern in the role of an outdoors multitool is its weight. The saw does work and having it as one of the two primary tools really places the emphasis on outdoors preparedness. Overall, the Sidekick hits the mark on both accounts. The other possible theme was the role of a backup multitool, one you could stash in a survival kit while you carried your primary multitool with you as an EDC. Parker the Sidekick was designed as an outdoors multitool, especially when compared to the more urbanized Wingman. Again, the only knock, and it is a small one, is the tiny bit of up and down blade play on the knife.Īccording to Mr. I am really surprised at just how nice everything is, I was expecting a few stiff pivots or burred tools, especially given the price, but there is nothing like that. The locks for the knife and saw work well. Otherwise, all of the tools are well made, the handles are comfy, and everything is sufficiently beefy and solid. Okay there is a little blade play when the knife is deployed. It is not Skeletool-level inspired, but really good nonetheless. Parker did very well, especially when you consider that he did not pick the tools to be included, but instead took a list given to him by marketing and had to figure out how to include everything the test groups wanted. The tool was designed by an in-house engineer at Leatherman named Peter Parker. Of course, the externally accessible tools are always a plus, especially when they are your most frequently used tools (the knife and saw, in this case). The push through slots (see below) are a nice idea and do exactly what they are supposed to do. The curve of the handle is nice especially when the pliers are deployed. Unlike the Skeletool, however, this design is not a lightweight, coming in at 7 ounces. The overall look of the Sidekick is very reminiscent of the Wave/Charge series, with a few cues taken from the Skeletool (holes in the frame to lighten the weight, asymmetric handles, and the shape of the blade). They need to see how in a moment of great trial all of Shackleton's possibility could come forward to affect his future and that of others. His story is one of the human spirit in all its wonder and all its frailty.īusiness leaders, I believe, have to be able to discern both of these aspects of people and of organizations. Ernest Shackleton, like all of us, is as flawed as he is brilliant, or as flawed as he is effective. This was a great story of integrity and humanity-and one that no one ever could have predicted, not in what happened, how it unfolded, or how it ended. Case method learning is partly about choosing compelling stories-stories that we can learn from, stories that we can make our own, stories that we don't forget as we go out in the world and begin to be responsible for other people's lives, jobs, money, energy, and commitment. The third reason is that the Shackleton story is compelling. Weeks after the crew abandoned the Endurance, it sank in the ice. And sometimes they have to be able to lead when the stakes are much, much greater than they expected them to be. Leaders have to be able to manage in stable, prosperous times and also in very uncertain, dangerous times. There are new questions about where we are going as a people, as business leaders, and as good citizens. The second reason is that we continue to live in turbulent times. THE NEW GOAL WAS TO SURVIVE." -NANCY KOEHN "AS SOON AS THAT SHIP WAS FROZEN, SHACKLETON FIGURED OUT THAT THE GOAL OF THE ENTERPRISE WAS NO LONGER TO WALK ACROSS THE CONTINENT OF ANTARCTICA. I firmly believe that the template for business education can be very broad. We also find important insights into how to motivate people, allocate resources, and act with great integrity in moments of crisis. When we look at these enduring works, we find more than just great literature and interesting questions about living a good life. History itself, literature, theater-look to Shakespeare and Henry V, Julius Caesar, or King Lear. The first is that there are many important lessons for business leaders to be found in areas outside business. Shackleton’s record of his journey made him famous around the world and transformed him into a symbol of achievement and hope in an age of darkness and war.Martha Lagace: Why was Shackleton's voyage good HBS case material? It is a tale unlike any to come before or since. It is the story of a voyage that lasts nearly three years-a firsthand account of hurricane-force winds, subzero temperatures, glaciers, icebergs, freezing water, starvation, and lethal, terrifying storms. Written by Shackleton, South is a truly astonishing story of human fortitude. South is the legendary story of Shackleton and his crew’s struggle to survive the elements and return home alive. Despite his experience in the Antarctic, disaster strikes early on when the Endurance is trapped in packed ice and slowly crushed, forcing Shackleton and his men off the ship and stranding them in a sea of ice. But Shackleton’s optimism doesn’t last long. He has a ship (the aptly named Endurance), a head brimming with optimism, and 28 men willing to follow him on an expedition across some of the most treacherous terrain on the planet. In 1914, as Europe braces for an unfathomably deadly war, explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton sets sail for Antarctica to do the impossible: traverse the continent. Never mind Rocky, Chuvalo was the classic blue-collar fighter portrayed by Marlon Brando in On The Waterfront. But whatever shadows lurk, know that it fuelled George on a mission to bring drug-abuse awareness around the world. While there are immaculate details of the fights, there is little illumination as to what led to the choices his sons made. The dark side of the book reflects the dark side of the Chuvalo story. (The photo Stallone-as-Rocky pulls from his wallet in the film is a picture from a Chuvalo fight.) Chuvalo’s 1966 15-round loss to Muhammad Ali at Maple Leaf Gardens locked in his image. He was a Rocky from the Great White North long before the movie was made. To top all that with one more blow to the head, when the book was released last December, Chuvalo didn’t do a book tour after cancer took his granddaughter. The undisputed fact is that the only man who fought all of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman was NEVER knocked down in 94 fights.īut the jarring stuff - what would knock most of us flat on the canvas of life - is on the last of those few pages: the brief descriptions of the three sons being found dead from having needles in their arms, and of the wife who couldn’t live past the first two. From the first moment Stripes lays eyes on the track, he’s hooked-he knows that if he could just get the chance, he could leave all those other horses in the dust. The Walsh farm borders the Turfway Racetrack, where highly skilled thoroughbreds compete for horse racing’s top honor, the ultra-prestigious Kentucky Crown. The un-aptly named bloodhound Lightening (SNOOP DOGG) keeps a lazy eye on goings-on at the farm-in between naps. The group is joined by Goose (voiced by JOE PANTOLIANO), a deranged big-city pelican who’s hiding out in the sticks until the heat dies down in Jersey. The little zebra, or “Stripes,” as Channing calls him, is soon introduced to the farm’s misfit troupe of barnyard residents, led by a cranky Shetland Pony named Tucker (voiced by Dustin Hoffman) and Franny (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg), a wise old goat who keeps the family in line. Once a champion thoroughbred trainer, Walsh has given up horse training for a quiet life with Channing on their modest Kentucky farm. The gangly little foal is rescued by horse farmer Nolan Walsh ( Bruce Greenwood), who takes him home to his young daughter Channing ( Hayden Panettiere). Here’s what the distributor says about their film: “In the middle of a raging thunderstorm, a traveling circus accidentally leaves behind some very precious cargo-a baby zebra (voiced by FRANKIE MUNIZ). Still, this movie is very inspirational and can be a fun way to enjoy a Saturday afternoon with the family. He ends up being the one to change, but it does seem to show that there are some consequences to her actions. There are good lessons exemplified throughout-one involving Channing disobeying her father, too. This movie is a lot of fun and did not feel dumbed down because it is something for kids. He knows what He is doing.” Similarly with our own lives, the best thing we can do is just keep running the race God has given each of us and trust that He is in control. One of the biggest challenges Stripes faces is how to initially get out of the starting gate for a race. One of their interactions provides an interesting analogy to following Christ. The overall drama is for younger kids, but might not be geared for really young kids under the age of three.īecause of Stripes’ goal to race with horses, Tucker the Pony reaches out and coaches him on how to do it. There are some more intense moments when Stripes is challenged or roughed up by the cocky, prideful horses next door, but it isn’t anything too scary. In one scene, Channing is angry with Clara Dalrymple (Wendie Malick) and stops short of calling her a bad name, but you may insinuate what she wanted to call her. It is a very clean movie, but there are a few bathroom humor type jokes made by Scuzz the Fly. Emmet Walsh, but most of the big name stars perform as the voices for the various animals. The character of Woodzie is played by a well known actor, M. The similar hopes and dreams of both Channing and Stripes run parallel throughout this story until each helps the other to find purpose and fulfillment. It is here that we discover that when people are not around, the animals (with the help of CGI mouths and lips) actually talk to each other, providing understanding into their thoughts and emotions. Right away, two stories begin involving Channing’s dreams and desires, as well as the struggles of the zebra, “Stripes” (voice by Frankie Muniz). It is a story geared for kids and revolves around a racing as its main event-and also, perhaps, a metaphor for yet another issue of relationships between different “races.”Ī young girl, Channing Walsh ( Hayden Panettiere), finds a stray zebra one night on her farm and convinces her dad ( Bruce Greenwood) to let her keep it. The positive messages include following your dreams no matter what and learning to be yourself despite what others may think about you. The delightful and humorous movie “Racing Stripes” isn’t horsing around when it comes to including meaningful and pertinent themes in the midst of its comedy and playfulness.
